Ash from Vilnius CHP will be used to restore a Norwegian island

Vilnius Combined Heat and Power Plant (Vilnius CHP) has concluded a three-year contract with the company Vakarų Krova for the management of fly ash from waste-to-energy production. The latter will hand over the ash to its subcontractor, the Norwegian company NOAH, which will use it to restore the landscape of the Norwegian island of Lågøya.

“The power plant under construction in Vilnius will not only prevent 160,000 tonnes of waste from entering Lithuanian landfills every year, but will also contribute to another environmentally sustainable project, the restoration of the Norwegian island of Lågøya”, says Saulius Barauskas, the CEO of Vilnius CHP.

In Norway, sophisticated technological equipment is used to mix fly ash with acid and water from industrial waste to form a plaster-like material. This material is used to fill the craters created by limestone mining on the island, and the restored island part is returned to the public use.

This way, the company NOAH aims to restore the pre-industrial landscape of the Norwegian island. The company has also recently announced plans to extract salts from hazardous fly ash. NOAH has received a grant of almost €1 million from Innovation Norway for the development of the latter technology.

Vilnius CHP is estimated to annually generate approximately 11,000 tonnes of flue gas treatment and fly ash that has no use in Lithuania. The total value of the three-year Vilnius CHP contract with Vakarų Krova reaches up to EUR 4.2 million, excluding VAT.
